Writers often ask about how to handle the moments in a memoir when they are not quite sure of the ‘facts.’ Consider using one of these linguistic markers .

Maybe …
I imagined …

These words alert your reader that you are making a creative leap, that what you are writing is now conjecture and imagined. Using this technique will also reveal something about the narrator; it’s the way ‘you’ imagine it. It’s a lovely way of placing you, the writer, in the story with immediacy and vulnerability.
